Kentucky immigrants still denied bond despite court ruling favoring hearings
Sep 1, 2026·Location: KY
A May ruling by the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals found the Trump administration had wrongly denied bond hearings to many immigrants detained by ICE in Kentucky, but a review of over 400 habeas corpus petitions by the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting found many immigrants are still being denied bond or face bond amounts they cannot afford. Of 178 cases where a judge ordered release or a bond hearing, only 18 people were granted bond, with amounts ranging from $1,500 to $25,000. Immigration attorneys say judges are disregarding factors like community ties and non-violent records when denying bond, and note the administration has fired nearly 100 immigration judges while hiring new judges through a campaign seeking 'deportation judges.'
