Two dozen UN human rights experts have demanded that the Trump administration halt its practice of deporting migrants to third countries with which they have no ties, saying it has caused a 'cascade of human rights violations,' including risks of torture, enforced disappearance, and death. Since 2025, the US has paid 35 countries at least $40 million to accept deportees, sending about 20,000 people to Mexico and more than 5,000 by flight to countries across Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia. Investigations found cases including an Iranian woman who had protested her government, a gay man who fled persecution in Ghana, and an Egyptian national and an Eritrean man held in an overcrowded police cell in Equatorial Guinea, where Amnesty International warns they risk torture. The experts said the countries involved lack the capacity to protect migrants' rights and called on the US to immediately end the policy, which they say allows the government to skirt legal obligations against returning people to places where they face persecution.
