Advocates say ICE is ramping up efforts to deport immigrants with longstanding legal protections, like withholding of removal, to countries where they have no connection, as the Supreme Court prepares to consider the legality of third-country deportations. Madeliene's mother held withholding of removal status, which allowed her to work legally and travel, but was arrested by ICE and detained at the Delaney Hall immigration detention center in New Jersey. After Madeliene spoke to reporters outside 26 Federal Plaza, a federal judge ordered her mother's release, and the two reunited ten days after the arrest.
