Illinois man injured, detained in Evanston after ICE mistook him for fugitive

On September 20, 2026, immigration agents in Evanston, Illinois, mistook a U.S. citizen for a fugitive they were seeking and tried to handcuff him after he declined to show identification. The man was left bloodied, suffering injuries to his head, neck and teeth, and was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital for treatment. Agents released him after determining he was not the person named in their warrant, and Evanston police are investigating the encounter.
