Abel: Cuban man says guards beat him when he refused transfer to Mexico

A Cuban detainee known as "Abel" (a pseudonym) said guards beat him at Camp East Montana after he refused transfer to Mexico, and that only four of about 14 detainees sent to the border returned.

Oct 17, 2026Fort Bliss, TXCountry of origin: Cuba

A Cuban detainee identified by the pseudonym "Abel" alleged in a sworn declaration that guards at Camp East Montana beat him after he refused to be cuffed and taken to Mexico. He said he was subsequently transported with about 13 other detainees to the border near Santa Teresa, where masked people were present and detainees were directed toward a bus bound for Mexico. Abel said only four people, including himself, returned from that trip. His account is part of a preliminary-injunction motion filed by detainees against the facility.
