Allan Marrero, a gay man from the Cayman Islands, was detained by ICE on November 24, 2025, immediately after a marriage-based green card interview at a USCIS office in Lower Manhattan with his husband, U.S. citizen Matthew. ICE cited a 2022 removal order tied to a missed immigration hearing that Marrero says he never received notice of, as he was in alcohol rehabilitation at the time. Advocacy and faith groups, including Make the Road New York and Middle Collegiate Church, called for his release, raising concerns about ICE's failure to provide his prescribed mental health medication. An immigration judge reopened his case and granted him bond of $6,000 on January 27, 2026, citing his clean record, marriage, and community support, but ICE refused to accept the bond payment and transferred him between facilities in Arizona, Texas, Mississippi, and New York. After roughly five months in custody, Marrero was released following a lawsuit challenging ICE's refusal to honor the bond order, reuniting with his husband at Middle Collegiate Church.
