Serawit Gezahegn Dejene, a 45-year-old Ethiopian national seeking asylum, died on January 29, 2025 at Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix while in ICE custody. He entered the U.S. near Lukeville, Arizona in August 2024, was arrested by Border Patrol, and was later granted a continuance by an immigration judge to pursue asylum and withholding of removal. In December 2024 he collapsed in the recreation yard at Eloy Detention Center, was hospitalized with a possible lymphoma diagnosis, and was transferred by air ambulance to a higher level of care before being intubated. He had been detained for nearly four months and, according to later reporting, was never screened for HIV despite developing severe symptoms; medical experts said routine testing could have allowed early diagnosis and treatment. ICE reported the cause of death as unknown pending further investigation.
