Criselda Vasquez, a Chicana painter whose 2017 work 'The New American Gothic' depicts her Mexican immigrant parents, said ICE detained her father on March 31, 2026, during a traffic stop she described as racial profiling. Vasquez said her father has lived in the U.S. for more than 40 years and has four adult children who are all U.S. citizens. She described him as 'a devoted husband, parent, and grandfather, and the hardest-working, most selfless person I know.' The family located the detention facility holding him and launched a GoFundMe, which raised nearly $75,000 toward lost wages and legal fees within about 10 days. Vasquez's painting is part of the permanent collection at the Lucas Museum for Narrative Art in Los Angeles.
