Lewelyn Dixon, a 64-year-old lab technician at UW Medicine who arrived from the Philippines at age 14 and held a green card for more than 50 years, was detained by CBP at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on February 28, 2025, while returning from a family trip. Officials cited a 2000-2001 embezzlement conviction for which she served no jail time and had completed restitution years earlier, something that had never before affected her travel or residency status. She was held at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma without bond eligibility, describing crowded conditions and forming friendships with other detainees, while family and supporters called for her release. In May 2025, Immigration Judge Tammy Fitting ruled Dixon should not be deported, citing her decades as a lawful permanent resident and community ties, and she was released as family, coworkers, and SEIU Local 925 union supporters rallied outside the facility. Dixon then applied for U.S. citizenship, passed her interview, and took the Oath of Allegiance. Her niece said the family did not want to risk going through the ordeal again.

“It was horrific; it was awful, it is crowded -- super crowded, they release maybe nine, bring back seven, release one, they bring three”
— Lewelyn Dixon
“The biggest thing to realize is she should have never been there in the first place”
