Disabled New Yorkers and patients lose caregivers as Haitian work permits expire
Aug 6, 2026·Location: Westchester, NY
Country of origin: Haiti

Cabrini nursing home in Westchester and a Long Island nonprofit serving people with developmental disabilities laid off Haitian caregivers after the Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for roughly 350,000 Haitians at the end of July. One Long Island mother said losing her nonverbal 23-year-old son's longtime aide, who helped him with daily tasks like showering and eating, felt like losing a "lifeline." Haiti is among the top five source countries for the U.S. direct-care workforce, and immigrants make up 30% of direct care workers nationally and 60% in New York, compounding an already severe long-term care staffing shortage.
