Houston law firm withdraws from $150M contract to represent migrant children
Aug 5, 2026·Location: Austin, TX

Burke Law Group, a 24-attorney Houston firm specializing in corporate law with no prior immigration practice, had been set to receive a $150 million no-bid federal contract to represent about 1,800 unaccompanied migrant children in removal proceedings. The firm added two immigration lawyers and published new immigration-practice information on its website the same week the contract was announced, after a previous agreement with dozens of legal-aid nonprofits was allowed to lapse on July 31. Following criticism, including a call from U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro for an investigation into the selection process, Burke Law Group announced it is withdrawing from the agreement, saying it had only intended to apply for part of the award.
