Judge Allows Trump Administration to End TPS for South Sudanese Nationals
Aug 7, 2026
Country of origin: South Sudan

US District Judge Patti Saris in Massachusetts ruled that the Trump administration can proceed with terminating Temporary Protected Status for hundreds of South Sudanese nationals, rejecting a challenge from groups including African Communities Together. The decision follows a June Supreme Court ruling that allowed the administration to strip TPS from hundreds of thousands of Haitians and Syrians. Saris dismissed arguments that only the attorney general, not the Department of Homeland Security, has authority to end TPS protections, calling the plaintiffs' reasoning self-contradictory. South Sudan, facing ongoing civil war and mass displacement, had held TPS designation since 2011.
