Daysi Munoz and her husband were arrested by Burleson, Texas police on suspicion of shoplifting while back-to-school shopping at a Walmart in August 2025, leading to their transfer into ICE custody and deportation to Honduras about 40 days later. Munoz said she asked ICE to let her take her daughters with her but was told she would need to spend four to five additional months in detention to arrange it. Their two U.S. citizen daughters, 19-year-old Dulce Zepeda and 13-year-old Maria, were left on their own in Fort Worth, with Dulce cooking, driving her sister to school, working at McDonald's, and selling her mother's jewelry to cover bills. After nearly a year living alone, the strain became overwhelming, and Maria obtained a visa to reunite with their parents in Honduras while Dulce remained in Texas. Advocates say the case reflects a broader pattern, citing government data showing at least 8,889 parents of U.S. citizen children were detained by ICE in the first seven months of the Trump administration.
