Assemblymember Larinda Hooks and other elected officials, including Catalina Cruz, Jessica González-Rojas, Alicia Hyndman, Clyde Vanel and Councilwoman Shanel Thomas-Henry, along with groups like Make the Road NY, the New York Immigration Coalition, the NAACP, Las Doñas and Hands Off NYC, rallied at Barclay Triangle in East Elmhurst against what they described as a surge in ICE activity in the neighborhood. Organizers said ICE pick-ups along Astoria and Northern Boulevards rose from two in June to 14 in July, and accused federal agents of targeting immigrants with no criminal record. The rally, which followed a similar protest a week earlier at Corona Plaza, launched a week of bilingual Know Your Rights pop-ups and concluded with a door-to-door canvass, with organizers also emphasizing solidarity between East Elmhurst's Black and Latino residents against what they called an abuse of power.
