Small business owners along Flatbush Avenue, a predominantly Caribbean immigrant corridor in Brooklyn, report declining foot traffic and climbing costs since reports of ICE activity began circulating in late May. A survey of 30 businesses by the Flatbush Junction Business Improvement District found 70% saw decreased foot traffic, 90% reported higher costs, half reported customers raising ICE-related concerns, and half said they had raised prices. Owners including a dry cleaner, a hardware store and a flower shop described the slowdown, with some linking it to both enforcement fears and uncertainty over Temporary Protected Status for Haitian immigrants. The Department of Homeland Security disputed that enforcement was behind the decline, saying ICE targets people charged with or convicted of crimes, while the New York Immigration Coalition urged affected families to know their rights and prepare legally.
