New York law banning police-ICE cooperation takes effect amid Nassau County pushback
Aug 27, 2026·Location: Mineola, NY

A new New York state law, the Local Cops Local Crimes Act, bars local police agencies from entering or maintaining agreements with ICE for civil immigration enforcement, effective this week. Nassau County, which had deputized officers under ICE and let ICE use its jails, has not committed to complying, prompting subpoenas from the state Attorney General's Office of Immigrant Trust. Gov. Kathy Hochul warned that any agency violating the law would face legal action, while immigrant advocates rallied outside Nassau County police headquarters demanding enforcement of the ban.
