Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced the county has formally terminated its 287(g) cooperation agreements with ICE, complying with a new New York law banning such partnerships, calling it "one of the saddest days" of his tenure while maintaining the law endangers public safety. Letters signed by the county attorney show the police department and sheriff's office ended the agreements effective Aug. 25, reserving the right to reenter them if the law is overturned; Blakeman is also part of a lawsuit by 15 county sheriffs challenging the law. The law also bars local jails from holding people for ICE, affecting Nassau's East Meadow facility, which has jailed over 1,000 people since last October. The announcement followed a rally by about 30 immigrant-rights advocates and elected officials, including Assembly Member Michaelle Solages and state Sen. Andrew Gounardes, who urged Blakeman to comply with the law.
