ICE arrests of non-criminal immigrants hit record high in July, data shows
Aug 29, 2026

Newly obtained federal enforcement figures show ICE took more than 800 immigrants with no criminal record into custody on an average day in July, the fastest pace since the start of the current administration, according to data reviewed by CBS News. For the first time, people held solely on civil immigration grounds made up the majority of ICE arrests, a shift driven by traffic stops, airport encounters, and routine check-in appointments rather than large-scale workplace or neighborhood raids. Data from the Deportation Data Project shows people convicted of violent offenses account for roughly 6% of ICE custody bookings since Trump returned to office, and just 4% of July's arrests, though a DHS spokesperson disputed similar findings from the Houston Chronicle, calling the non-criminal label misleading. South Florida, Houston, Newark, Denver, and San Ysidro all saw sharp increases in street-level arrests, with expansion of 287(g) agreements deputizing local police expected to continue growing enforcement reach through 2027.
