Undocumented immigrants and some legal residents could be excluded from 2030 census
Sep 9, 2026

The Census Bureau proposed changing the 2030 census to exclude undocumented immigrants, along with some immigrants who are in the country legally but on a temporary basis or with less permanent status than a green card. The bureau also proposed eliminating race and ethnicity questions from the census, data that has been collected since 1790 and used for redistricting and civil rights enforcement. The proposal follows Trump's earlier directive to the Commerce Department and revives an effort from his first term that the Supreme Court previously blocked; Democrats have vowed to challenge it legally.
