Haitian TPS Holders Use NY Parade to Spotlight Status Loss Crisis
Sep 7, 2026·Location: Brooklyn, NY
Country of origin: Haiti
After the Supreme Court ruled federal courts cannot review the Trump administration's decision to end Temporary Protected Status for Haiti, roughly 350,000 Haitian immigrants nationwide lost their legal status, a termination a federal judge finalized in early August with work permits expiring July 27. Many Haitians, including Dimitry Celony, attended the West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn to celebrate their culture, with this year's event also spotlighting the TPS crisis. Natalie Lafontant, who organizes Lespri Ayiti, the parade's largest Haitian mas group of about 180 artists, designers and musicians, said her group struggled to find float sponsors this year but marched anyway, calling on Haitian traditions of music, dance and art to persevere. New York's Haitian community, estimated at 163,000 in the metro area and concentrated in Brooklyn's Flatbush, East Flatbush and Crown Heights, is the second-largest in the country after Miami.
