The White House withdrew its nomination of former Oklahoma state trooper Lance Schroyer to lead ICE, less than three months after announcing his selection, issuing a brief statement that gave no reason for the withdrawal. The move follows stalled Senate confirmation and skepticism from DHS officials about his qualifications; Schroyer, a senior adviser to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, had no prior experience at ICE or leading a major law enforcement agency. ICE has not had a Senate-confirmed director since 2017. The withdrawal comes amid intense scrutiny of ICE's expanded enforcement operations, including the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal agents in Minnesota earlier this year.
