Freedom for Immigrants condemned a new federal policy that conceals the whereabouts of thousands of immigrants with final deportation orders. The group's 2021 report documented nearly 700 cases of people who could not be located via the ICE Locator tool between 2017 and 2021, often following transfers between facilities. Reporting from the Associated Press and the Washington Post confirms that as of September 15, ICE's policy removes anyone with a final removal order from the online locator and bars detention facility staff from telling lawyers or family members whether such a person is being held there. Because physical access to facilities is also restricted, attorneys and relatives now have no reliable way to confirm where a person with a final order is detained or whether they remain in the United States.
