State Department's 'Office of Remigration' deal network tops $410 million, per leaked documents
Sep 21, 2026

The Trump administration has restructured the State Department's Population, Refugees, and Migration bureau to prioritize third-country deportation deals, reportedly striking agreements with more than 30 countries since January 2025. Leaked documents obtained by The Washington Post show at least $410 million has been committed to the effort, which has sent migrants from China, Russia, Iran and Afghanistan to Costa Rica, and migrants from Vietnam, Laos, Cuba and Jamaica to Eswatini, countries with which they had no prior connection. Andrew Veprek, an ally of Stephen Miller, was promoted to oversee the bureau, while Miller himself is described by officials as a driving force behind the operation. On September 18, a federal appeals court issued a ruling pushing back against aspects of the program.
