Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block the opening of a nearly 1,200-bed ICE detention facility, known as the Big Horn immigration detention center, in Hudson, a town of about 1,600 residents. The facility, operated by GEO Group under a $528.7 million contract, would nearly double the town's population, according to Weiser. The suit alleges violations of the National Environmental Policy Act, the Administrative Procedure Act and the Immigration and Nationality Act, citing a lack of environmental review of impacts on local wildlife, water supply and public services at the former prison, which closed in 2013. It is the third lawsuit filed against the facility, following separate suits from environmental and immigrant rights groups, and asks the court to void the contract and halt construction until required reviews are completed.
