Francisco Gaspar Andrés, a 48-year-old Guatemalan immigrant married 25 years with five children, was arrested with his wife Lucía Pedro Juan during a traffic stop in Florida on September 1, 2025. Both were transferred to the Camp East Montana ICE detention facility in El Paso, Texas, where guards separated them and ordered them not to speak or touch. His daughter said he reported suffering from lack of food, inadequate medical care, and poor conditions during weekly phone calls, and another detainee said he had asked for help but did not receive it. His health deteriorated in mid-November with complications from alcoholic liver cirrhosis, low sodium, and kidney failure; he was hospitalized on November 16, placed on dialysis and a liver transplant list, and an immigration judge ordered his removal that same day. Pedro Juan was deported to Guatemala on November 28 despite pleading to see him, and learned of his death only after returning to her hometown. Gaspar Andrés died on December 3, becoming the first known death at Camp East Montana, the nation's largest immigration detention center. The county medical examiner attributed the death to natural causes, though conflicting reports indicate authorities also ruled it a homicide. Detainees reported verbal abuse by guards, including being served dog food. At least 30 people have died in ICE custody in 2025.
