Haitian TPS Holders Suspended From Jobs as Work Permits Expire Without Extension

Jul 15, 2026·Location: New York, NY

Country of origin: Haiti

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services did not extend work authorization for Haitian Temporary Protected Status holders this week, after weeks of last-minute renewals following the Supreme Court's June decision allowing the Trump administration to end Haiti's TPS designation. Businesses like the Half Shell Raw Bar in Key West, Florida, have begun suspending longtime Haitian employees, including cooks, busboys and oyster shuckers who have worked there for over a decade. The Department of Homeland Security said TPS was always meant to be temporary and has encouraged Haitians to accept a $2,600 payment to return home. Haiti continues to face a humanitarian crisis, with nearly 1.5 million people displaced by gang violence and more than 2,300 killed since January, according to the United Nations.
