Job Garcia, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen and PhD student at Claremont Graduate University, was filming an ICE raid outside a Hollywood Home Depot on June 19, 2025, when CBP agents tackled him without warning as he tried to document the arrest of day laborers and inform them of their rights. Garcia said an agent knelt on his back and grabbed his neck, and his phone was smashed during the confrontation. He was taken to a holding area at Dodger Stadium, where he heard agents say they had detained 31 people that day, and said officers discussed charging him with assaulting a federal agent before the conversation changed after video of his arrest went viral. Garcia was released after more than 24 hours without arraignment or a court date. He and MALDEF are seeking $1 million in damages from the Department of Homeland Security through a Federal Tort Claims Act notice, citing wrongful arrest, detention based on race, assault, battery, false imprisonment, and interference with his right to document government actions.
